How Beauty Met the Beast–Holiday Playlist

Posted & filed under .

I love listening to music while I write, and sometimes a song will perfectly capture the feeling of a scene. Songs were particularly important to me while writing How Beauty Met the Beast because it’s a winter holiday story…but I wrote it in April! To get in the mood, I found a lot of really great alternative holiday songs. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did!

Jolie’s holiday song

As I invented Jolie’s song myself and therefore don’t have a recording of it, I played this awesome number by Meiko while writing Jolie’s dance at the burlesque.

I don’t think Santa’s coming this year
‘Cause I’ve been a bad, a bad girl.

For Jolie’s visit to the Underlight…

…I love Regina Spektor’s My Dear Acquaintance

Hail to those who we hold so dear
And hail to those who are gathered here
And a happy new year to all that is living
To all that is gentle young and forgiving

For an upbeat holiday mood…

…nothing beats My Chemical Romance’s remake of All I Want for Christmas is You. This was great to listen to while I wrote the car chase.

At Jolie’s condo…

I wanted something laid-back and sad yet hopeful. Coldplay’s Christmas Lights, though actually about a reunion and not a hope for the future, was a great listen.

When you’re still waiting for the snow to fall, doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all…
But I’m still up here holding on to all those chandeliers of hope

Though a little pop for Hauk’s tastes…

…I love the sentiment of Wish List by Neon Trees. This was another fun one to listen to while writing Jolie and Hauk’s banter.

A lump of coal won’t do it justice.
It’s all the loneliness I fear…
Cause I don’t need candy or the toys from my youth.
I just want you, darling. I just want you.

For the Final Party…

…in the Underlight, I listened to this gorgeous song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson

This is my winter song to you. The storm is coming soon; it rolls in from the sea.
My voice a beacon in the night, my words will be your light to carry you to me…
Is love alive?
